 PBS--Positive Behavior SupportMinimize

Newton is now a PBS school!

 Principles of PBS

  •  Social and behavioral competence and character are learned in the home, school, and community.
  • Prevention is more effective than reaction.
  • Teaching positive behavior is more effective than assuming students already have these skills.
  • Teaching positive behavior is more effective than punishing negative behavior.
  • Instructional & behavioral decisions are based on data.
  • Systemic change produces long-term sustainability.

Over 7500 schools across the world and over 500 in Colorado are implementing Schoolwide PBS, including 15 in LPS so far!

What are the benefits of PBS?

  • Participating schools report a 40- 60% reduction in office discipline referrals.
  • Resulting in a 40 – 60% increase in time that teachers are able to spend on other tasks besides discipline.
  • Resulting in a 40 – 60% increase in time that students are engaged in learning.

 Student StatementMinimize

Mrs. Mikkelsen's homeroom class created an artist statement to go with their door decorated with soup cans.

"The Newton's CODE cans represent how middle school students are stereotyped.  From a distance, our cans and our selves look like an identical group, but we are not all the same.  Each one of us has our own unique flavor once you get to know us.  We decided to use "Newton's CODE" instead of "Knight's CODE" because we are more than a mascot, we are a community.  Our personalities all have their own flavor, and while we all act differently we all follow the same code and try to contribute to society and become better people."
